Cougars Win Fourth-Consecutive Shutout

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- For the second time in eight days, Azusa Pacific earned a 7-0 sweep against Biola with five of the six singles matches being quick wins for the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.

Azusa Pacific has now won 32 of its last 33 points since facing No. 1 Barry for a six-match winning streak, including four shutouts in a row to improve to 15-4 on the season, while Biola drops to 4-7.

The best match of the day was the highly anticipated rematch between Biola's Colbeyshae Emery and Eleonora Liga at No. 1 singles after both players were first-team All-PacWest singles selections last year. Liga entered the match with a 3-0 in the head-to-head record between two of the PacWest's best singles players over the last few years.

Emery won the opening set 6-3, marking the first time that the Eagles' No. 1 had won a set against Liga. The Cougars' top singles player then came back to win the second set 6-4, to extend the match. Since the Cougars had already clinched the victory, a supertiebreaker was played in place of a full third set and Liga won the tiebreaker 10-4 for her 14th win in a row.

Liga now has a 16-1 record on the season, which is the best record of any player in the PacWest, making her one of the top candidates for the PacWest Player of the Year honor at this point in the season. Hawai`i Pacific's Shaline Pipa is the only player to have defeated Liga, and she has an 8-2 record after Liga won the rematch against the reigning PacWest Player of the Year at the beginning of the month.

The rest of the Cougars' lineup remained dominant dropping just 10 games in a similar performance to the one they had less than 24 hours prior against Westmont. Reigning PacWest Player of the Week Madison Kane continued her torid pace with a 6-0, 6-2 win over veteran Brooke Fager at No. 2 singles.

April Wong earned the most lopsided win of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 singles. Vini Bautista won by the exact same score as Kane, 6-0, 6-2 at No.4 singles. She is now 5-1 this season at the No. 4 position.

Miruna Tudor has the PacWest's second-longest winning streak with her 13th win in a row, trailing only her teammate Liga. She won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, which was actually the second-closest singles match of the day. Katherine Nguyen now has a career record of 31-5 after collecting a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

The doubles point at the beginning was won by taking the top-2 sets. Liga and Kane won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point shortly after Bautista and Tudor won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

The Cougars will return home on Thursday to face Concordia, which was just named the PacWest Team of the Week. Azusa Pacific has an 11-3 record at home this year.
