AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific didn't have to expend much energy in collecting its 14th win of the season, beating future conference opponent Westmont 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Cougar Tennis Complex, dropping just 13 games in the dominant win.
Westmont is set to join the PacWest next year, and the Cougars sent a message about what tennis is like in the PacWest with the one-sided victory. The Cougars are now 14-4 on the season, while the Warriors drop to 2-11.
Madison Kane and
Eleonora Liga dropped just one game in a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles for the No. 4 team in the country. That was the only game the Cougars lost in doubles with
Vini Bautista and
Miruna Tudor winning 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, the run of success continued with
April Wong winning 12 games in a row, almost as many as Westmont won as a team. Wong has now won at least one bagel set in four-consecutive matches, but Friday was her first double-bagel win since February 23, 2019 against Redlands.
Tudor quickly made the score 3-0 with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. She now has a 12 match winning streak, and along with
Katherine Nguyen and Liga, the trio have a combined record of 40-3 in singles this season.
Katia Betancourt then clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles, improving to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Kane, Bautista and Nguyen were all ahead by a set when the match was halted.
Azusa Pacific is now 11-3 at home this season, but will hit the road Saturday to face Biola. The Cougars toppled the Eagles 7-0 just one week ago.
