Cougars Open The Bagelry At Home

AZUSA, Calif. – In a rematch of last year's NCAA West Regional, No. 17 Azusa Pacific topped Fresno Pacific 6-1 at the Cougar Tennis Complex with five straight-set victories in singles on Wednesday afternoon's match which had been rescheduled.

The Cougars won five sets at love in singles against the Sunbirds, giving Azusa Pacific five wins in a row against the Sunbirds since they restarted their women's tennis program.

Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane combined to win 30 of 35 games combined between singles and doubles. The Cougars' No. 1 doubles team got a 6-1 win against Fresno Pacific, and then Katherine Nguyen partnered with Miruna Tudor for the first time in the young season to win 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Katia Betancourt and April Wong also partnered for the first time this season at No. 3 doubles and led 5-4 when the Cougars clinched the doubles point.

In singles, Liga faced two-time All-PacWest singles player Lea Falentin and only lost one game for a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Kane, who had defeated Falentin at the regional last year, won almost just as easily with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to earn her first victory of the season.

Tudor earned the Cougars' most lopsided triumph with a double-bagel, 6-0, 6-0. Wong won her singles match shortly after that, 6-1, 6-1 for her 57th career singles victory. Nguyen made her singles debut for the 2023 season with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win.

Fresno Pacific's lone win came at No. 3 singles where Sanne Brull won 6-2, 6-4 against Vini Bautista, who had the Cougars' clinching victory in the season-opener against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they land in Honolulu for a pair of matches against Hawai`i Pacific and then Hawai`i Hilo on Sunday.
