AZUSA, Calif. - No. 17 Azusa Pacific improved its record to 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon, after the Cougars swept Cal State Los Angeles by a 7-0 score.
Katherine Nguyen and Katia Betancourt got the afternoon started for the Cougars, winning the No. 3 doubles match by a 6-2 score. It was the duo's second time playing together this season, and they are 2-0 together.
At No. 1, the nation's No. 4 ranked doubles team clinched the doubles point for the Cougars, as Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane posted the 6-2 victory at No. 1, which improves their season record to 3-1, and 16-4 overall including last season. Playing to clinch in doubles, the Cougars' No. 2 doubles pair of Miruna Tudor and April Wong were ahead 5-3 when Liga & Kane clinched the point.
Liga, ranked as the No. 5 singles player in the nation, put Azusa Pacific up 2-0 in the match, beating Sarah Olmos at No. 1 by a 6-1, 6-1 tally. Moments later, Kane captured the Cougars' third point of the day, as she won at No. 2, also by a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set fashion. Kane's last six victories have all occurred in straight-sets, dating back to last season.
Katherine Nguyen, who entered today with a 19-match unbeaten streak, extended the run to 20, as she delivered the match-clincing point for the Cougars at No. 5, where she took the first set 6-1, and then secured the victory with a 6-2 second set win.
Katia Betancourt at No. 6 (7-5, 6-2) and Vini Bautista at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) also earned straight-set wins on the day, and Miruna Tudor closed out the afternoon with a 10-8 win in the super-tiebreak, following set scores of 6-1, 2-6.
