HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific took on Division I Hawai'i on Friday afternoon, and the Warriors were able to claim a 7-0 victory over the Cougars.
The afternoon started with a competitive doubles portion of the competition, with the doubles point requiring all three matches to be played out. At No. 1, the Warriors' Andre Ilagan and Karl Collins beat the Cougars' Leyton Bohren and Marko Nikoliuk by a 6-2 score. In the No. 3 matchup, it was Azusa Pacific's freshmen duo of Brody Bohren and Vili Bonev that earned a 6-3 win over veterans Lucas Labrunie and Andy Hernandez. With each team in possession of a doubles win, the point would be decided in the No. 2 matchup. The Warriors would take the 1-0 match lead, as Axel Labrunie and Kilian Maitre were able to hold off Elias Emilio Walter and Miha Velicki by a 7-5 tally.
In singles, Hawai'i won five of the six matches in straight-sets to secure the overall victory. The Cougars' lone set victory was claimed by Nikoliuk at No. 2, where he bounced back from a 4-6 first set defeat to win the second set 6-3. Nikoliuk nearly took the third set as well, but he would eventually fall in the tiebreak (10-7). Nikoliuk's opponent was Axel Labrunie, who entered with a four match unbeaten streak against Division I opponents.
Up Next: The Cougars will be back on the courts tomorrow, when they take on No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific, the team that Azusa Pacific beat last spring in the PacWest Championship match. The Sharks will enter tomorrow's match with a 2-0 record.
