HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Freshmen Sophia Emerson and Madison Woodward each collected their first career goals in a 2-0 victory at Chaminade on Monday evening top open play on the islands.Â
"Big road win." said head coach Brooke Lincoln. "Two freshmen coming in clutch and the girls did what we asked them to do in the game plan. I was excited to see them get the result."
How it Happened: Both teams got out to an aggressive start up field, trading shots within the first 20 minutes. Avery Guiel and Bethany Tee collected back-to-back shots in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, but the Silversword goalkeeper came up with both saves to keep the game scoreless.Â
With five minutes left in the first half, Azusa Pacific provided pressure in their final third. Katie Prado's shot went wide and the Cougars were awarded a corner kick. On the incoming kick, Damaris Lopez' shot hit the woodwork followed by her next shot that was deflected off the Chaminade goalkeeper and Emerson was there to collect a header shot into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.Â
In the final minute of the first half, Tee's shot went high, but Azusa Pacific found another corner kick opportunity with 18 seconds remaining, and the incoming shot found Woodward who collected a header shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead heading into the half.Â
Chaminade collected five corner kicks and four shots with one on frame in the second half compared to the Cougars' two shots by Alexis Fuller and Kylie Carwitz. Azusa Pacific's back line was able to halt any attack that Chaminade could find in the final 45 minutes, and the game concluded in a 2-0 victory in favor of the Cougars.Â
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific holds a 9-1-1 record over the Silverswords. The Cougars collected 13 shots with five on frame compared to Chaminade's six shots with one on frame. 13 different players have now collected a goal on the season with 12 different Cougars recording an assist so far this season. This is the sixth clean sheet for the Cougars this season and 12th individual clean sheet of Maddie William's career.Â
