ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Azusa Pacific's 2022 campaign came to an end on Wednesday afternoon in the national quarterfinals, as the No. 2-seed Central Oklahoma beat the Cougars 4-1.
The Broncos opened the match with doubles victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point, which put the Cougars in an early deficit.
In singles, Central Oklahoma would go up 3-0, with straight set wins at No. 5 and at No. 1. Katherine Nguyen scored the Cougars' lone point in the match, by way of a dominant straight-set sweep at No. 6. Nguyen won the first set 6-3, and then took the second set 6-1. Nguyen, a true freshman for the Cougars, closed out her first collegiate season with a 16-match unbeaten streak. During that streak, she won in straight-sets on 13 occasions.
"So proud of the way our women competed today," said head coach Mark Bohren, "The better team did win today. But that still does not take away from what we have accomplished this year. We have a great group of girls that were a blast to coach."
Azusa Pacific closes out the season with a 20-7 overall record. This year will be one to remember for the program, as the Cougars won their second-consecutive PacWest title and reached the national quarterfinals for the second time in the NCAA era. Azusa Pacific's 20 wins marks the second time in the NCAA era and the sixth time in program history in which the Cougars have won 20 or more matches in a season.
While seniors Audrey Stewart and Carolyn Brooner will be missed next season, head coach Mark Bohren returns eight athletes for the '23 campaign. Coach Bohren returns Eleonora Liga, Madison Kane, April Wong, Katherine Nguyen, Mikaela Mueller, Kylie Hull, Hannah Mulbarger, and Katia Betancourt. The Cougars will look to contend for a third-consecutive PacWest crown, and Azusa Pacific will be in the hunt for the program's third appearance at Nationals.
