ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Following a 4-0 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Azusa Pacific is headed to the national quarterfinals for the second time in the NCAA era.
The Cougars opened the match by winning the doubles point, winning by forfeit on court No. 3, followed by a 6-0 shutout by Eleonora Liga and Madison Kane on court No. 1. Liga and Kane are now 13-3 as a duo at No. 1 this season. Liga and Kane have now won in 6-0 fashion in three of their matches this season.
A forfeit by the Crimson Hawks at No. 6 put Azusa Pacific up 2-0 to start singles off. At No. 5, Audrey Stewart won her first set by a 6-3 score to gain the upperhand in her dual against . Stewart maintained momentum into the second set, and she claimed a 6-1 victory to give the Cougars a 3-0 match lead.
Madison Kane closed out the first round matchup for the Cougars, winning at No. 2 in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Kane, who has a season record of 16-5, has won 12 matches in straight-set fashion.
"We definitely are not used to the 90 plus degree weather with high humidity," said head coach Mark Bohren, "but the girls fought hard and got the win. We are eager to compete against a tough team tomorrow."
Up Next: The Cougars will take on No. 2-seed Central Oklahoma tomorrow at 4:00 pm ET (1:00 pm PT). Tomorrow's match marks the second time that Azusa Pacific and Central Oklahoma have met at Nationals, as the two teams squared off in the first round in 2019. In that contest, the Cougars beat the Broncos by a 4-1 score to advance to their only other NCAA quarterfinal appearance. Live scoring for tomorrow's match can be followed here.
