No. 15 Cougars Extend Streak to Eight

Azusa Pacific won its eighth-consecutive match with a 7-0 road win at Fresno Pacific on Friday.

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 15 Azusa Pacific won its eighth-consecutive match on Friday, as the Cougars traveled to Fresno Pacific to beat the Sunbirds 7-0. This morning's win is the fifth time this season that Azusa Pacific has posted a 7-0 sweep of an opponent. The Cougars are now 15-4 overall.

Sam Sippel and Ethan Smith opened the morning with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and the No. 1 duo of Leyton Bohren and Ryan Nuno would follow with a 6-3 win as well to take the doubles point. Bohren and Nuno, who rose to No. 22 in the ITA national doubles rankings this week, are now 14-3 this season. 

After Sippel was a part of the doubles win that set the tone for the Cougars, he then led the way in the singles portion of the match, winning in straight-sets (6-0, 6-1) at No. 2. Sippel's record is now 12-4 this season, and he was ranked No. 51 in the ITA national singles rankings this week. 

On court No. 1, Nuno would add another point for the Cougars with a straight-set victory by an identical score of 6-0, 6-1. Ranked No. 9 in the nation for the second-straight week, Nuno improved his record to 12-4 this season.

Elias Emilio Walter was the match-clincher for the Cougars, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Walter, who is 12-5 this season, has won his last five matches in straight-sets. 

With the match secured, Ian Lee, Miha Velicki and Caden Samkutty added three more points for the Cougars with straight-set victories. Lee took the No. 5 match by a score of 6-4, 6-2, Velicki won at No. 4 (7-6 (7-0), 6-3), and Samkutty closed out the match with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win at No. 6.

Up Next: The Cougars will close out the regular season on Friday, April 15, when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 4:00 pm match in Azusa.
