Regular Season Finale Extends Streak to Nine

The No. 15 ranked Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-1 to close out the regular season.

AZUSA, Calif. — The No. 15 ranked Azusa Pacific men's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine with a 4-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday evening. The win capped off a regular season that saw the Cougars finish with an overall record of 16-4. In the latest regional rankings, the Cougars are ranked No. 2 which is the potential seed they could receive entering the conference tournament.

Miha Velicki and Elias Emilio Walter opened the match with a dominant 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, it's the duo's seventh straight win as they improved their record to 12-2 together. Then, Ethan Smith and Sam Sippel clinched the first point of the match with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches began and it was Sippel carrying over the momentum and securing the second point for the Cougars. He won at No. 2 singles in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-2), improving to 13-4 on the season. Just seconds later on court No. 4, Walter took home the third point winning his match at No. 4 singles also in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Walter has won six in a row in singles and improved to 13-5 overall on the season.

On court No. 5, Velicki was down 5-3 in the first set but won four in a row to take the first set. But, the Stags picked up their first point on court No. 6 with a match win and fought back on courts No. 1 and No. 3 forcing a third set in both.

With the score at 3-1, Velicki secured the match win on court No. 5 as he took the second set 6-2 to win in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Velicki is now 5-2 at No. 5 in singles on the year.
