IRVINE, Calif. - Azusa Pacific track & field had several athletes either meet or improve provisional status on Saturday, as the Cougars competed on the second day of the Vince O'Boyle Invitational hosted by UC Irvine.
Â
On the men's side, Jermel Jones II won the long jump event with a season-best mark of 7.39m (24' 3"), which puts him No. 5 on the national qualifying list. Jones II is coming off an indoor season in which he became the Long Jump National Champion.
Â
In the track events on Saturday, the women's team had three athletes run their way onto the provisional list in their respective events, and Mechaela Hyacinth improved upon her 100 time. Jaylah Walker, who was the national runner-up in the 100 hurdles at the 2021 Outdoor National Championships last spring, ran the event for the first time this outdoor season. Walker would win the event with a provisional time of 14.07 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in the nation so far this season. Jordan Hammond also ran a provisional-qualifying time on the hurdles for the Cougars, as she raced in the 400 hurdles and crossed the finish line with a time of 1:00.94, which puts her No. 6 on the qualifying list and earned her a first-place finish among the field of competitors. In the 800, Marian Ledesma ran her way onto the provisional qualifying list, clocking in at 2:12.04 to win the event. Ledesma's time puts her at No. 12 nationally for the event.
Â
Hyacinth won the 100 on Saturday behind a race of 11.69 seconds, which improved upon her previous provisional time of 11.83, which she ran last weekend at the Rafer Johnson & Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational hosted by UCLA. Hyacinth, who is the reigning outdoor National Champion in the 100, is now No. 6 on the qualifying list.
