Throwers Start Weekend at Beach Opener

Azusa Pacific had athletes compete in the javelin and hammer on Friday at the Beach Opener.

LONG BEACH, Calif – A weekend at the Beach Opener (hosted by Long Beach State) for Azusa Pacific track & field started on Friday with a group of Cougars competing in the javelin and hammer events. 

 

The performance of the day came in the women's javelin, where Luisa Fischer turned in a personal best performance and a second place finish. Fischer posted a top mark of 44.00m (144' 4"), which not only sets a new personal record, but it improves upon her previous provisional mark of 42.43m (139' 2"). Fischer is currently No. 2 on the national qualifying list, while her teammate, Nicole Warwick, sits atop the national list at 44.75m (146' 10"). 

 

Fischer was one of five Cougars that competed in the women's javelin, as Molly Olson, Sara Wagenveld, Allie Brooks and Ashley Hume also participated in the event. Olson also set a new personal record on Friday, as she set a mark of 39.29m (128' 11"). Olson finished 10th in the competition, while Wagenveld followed at No. 11 (38.54m/126' 5") and Brooks was No. 12 (37.39m/122' 8"). Hume finished with a mark of 28.32m (92' 11").

 

Brooks also competed in the women's hammer, alongside teammate Alison Bylsma. Bylsma had a personal-best performance of 31.43m (103' 1"), and Brooks threw a distance of 29.06m (95' 4").

 

On the men's side, Weston Ellis matched his career-best distance in the hammer. Ellis matched his career mark of 53.71m (176' 2"). Ellis was the top non-Division I finisher in the event at No. 15.

 

In the men's javelin, Logan Peyton also was a top non-Division I finisher, as he took fifth with a mark of 57.96m (190' 2"). Peyton has a career and season-best mark of 62.98m (206' 7"), which he set last weekend at the Rossi Relays, and is the top mark on the national list. Seth Storlie also competed in the event for the Cougars, and he reached a distance of 43.04m (141' 2").
