LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Azusa Pacific spent Saturday competing at UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, and the Cougars walked away from the event with several provisional times and marks.
Â
Azusa Pacific had a total of nine provisional efforts, with seven on the women's side and two for the men. Two Cougar relay teams ran their way onto the qualifying list on Saturday. Trinity Miller, Jaylah Walker, Kiayra Holmes and Mechaela Hyacinth started the day off in the 4x100, where the quartet ran a provisional time of 45.91 seconds, which was the fastest time among a field that included six Division I teams, and puts the Cougars at No. 3 on the national qualifying list. The Cougars' 4x400 relay also earned a first place finish on Saturday, as Holmes and Walker teamed up with Marian Ledesma and Alayna Verner for a provisional time of 3:47.93. Entering this weekend, that time is fast enough for No. 2 on the national list.
Â
In addition to her efforts in the Cougars' relays, Walker ran her way onto the provisional qualifying list for the 400 hurdles, the event in which she is the reigning NCAA Division II Women's National Champion. Running the event for the first time this outdoor season, Walker finished first at 59.54 seconds, as she was the only athlete to cross the line in under a minute. Walker now sits atop the national qualifying list.
Â
Hyacinth, who is the reigning National Champion in the 100, also ran her best event for the first time this season. Hyacinth wasted no time in adding her name to the provisional qualifying list, as she ran a time of 11.83 seconds to start her season.Â
Â
Azusa Pacific had three athletes cross the finish line in the 400 with provisional and personal-best times, as Alayna Verner and Kiayra Holmes did it on the women's side, while Dominic Gonzalez-Shelmire improved his provisional status. Alayna Verner put together a race in which she finished with a time of 55.34 seconds, which puts her No. 2 on the qualifying list, while Holmes ran a time of 55.68 seconds. For the second straight week, Gonzalez-Shelmire hit the provisional standard, as he improved upon his time of 47.66 seconds at the Franson Classic (Mar. 19) to finish today at 47.59 seconds. With the improvement, Gonzalez-Shelmire moved up from No. 9 to a tie for No. 8 on the qualifying list.
Â
In addition to the provisional performances on the track, the Cougars also had a couple provisional marks in the field on Saturday. In the women's pole vault, Sara Wagenveld won the event with a season-best clearance of 4.04m (13' 3"), which puts her No. 5 on the national list. For the men's squad, Raymon Harper competed in the high jump and wrapped up the day with a jump of 2.06m (6' 9"), which matches his season-best mark to this point.Â
