No. 18 Azusa Pacific defeated Biola 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to advance to a five match winning streak

AZUSA, Calif.-- Winning its fifth straight match, No. 18 Azusa Pacific picked up a 5-2 win over rival Biola University on Saturday afternoon. The men advance to a 12-4 overall record and have won both of their regular season matches against the Eagles.

Fresh off a sweep over Middlebury College earlier this week, Ryan Nuno and Leyton Bohren, who are ranked No. 26 in the nation for doubles, picked up the first win of the day with a 6-1 victory on court No. 1. They were followed by a 6-3 win from Sam Sippel and Ethan Smith to secure the doubles point on court No. 3 for the Cougars. "I am happy with the way we played in doubles today," said head coach Mark Bohren, "We had a strong performance from Sam and Ethan to get the first point on the board."

The Cougars won three consecutive matchups in straight sets in singles to secure the overall win, with Miha Veliki (6-0, 6-2) at No. 6, Bohren (6-3, 6-3) on court No. 3, and Walter (6-1, 6-4) on court No. 4 served as the match-clinching victor.

Following the 4-0 win, the remaining three courts finished out their matches. On court No. 2 Sippel fell to his opponent 6-7 (2-7) and 4-6.

Nuno, who was recently ranked No. 10 in the nation by the ITA, advanced to a 9-4 singles record with a victory in the third set super tie break, going 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), and 10-5.

After forcing a third set, Ivan Hornburg fell to his opponent in a tight battle going 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 9-11 to close out the day.

Homecoming Success: The Cougars' win today helped contribute to an undefeated 8-0 weekend for home athletic events on Homecoming. Yesterday, both baseball and softball swept their doubleheaders, while today, softball swept another doubleheader and both tennis teams earned the victories. Azusa Pacific also went 5-0 against Biola this weekend, as tennis' two wins with baseball beating the Eagles in the doubleheader yesterday and a road game today secured the sweep. Azusa Pacific holds a more than comfortable lead in the Cornerstone Cup rivalry series with Biola, and the current series standings can be seen here.

Up Next: The Cougars will pick up the action on Friday, April 1st, where they will face off against Concordia Irvine for the second time this season after defeating the Eagles 6-1 in February. The match is scheduled to start at 2:30pm and will take place here on the Cougars' home court where they are 8-3 at home.
