AZUSA, Calif. - The Cougars edged out the No. 5 ranked UIndy Greyhounds 4-3 in a battle on their home court. Azusa Pacific fell in the first set of all singles matchups, but rebounded to win every second set in singles play, forcing a third set in all singles matches. The Cougars showed their resilience and ability to play with one of the best teams in the country on Friday.
The Cougars got off on the right foot and got ahead of the Greyhounds early on. However, like the singles matchups, every doubles match was a battle. Elias Emilio Walter and Miha Velicki snagged the first win of the day as they were victorious at No. 2 with a score of 7-5. The doubles point was secured by the Cougars in the tiebreak set on court No. 1. Ryan Nuno and Leyton Bohren took the victory 7-6 (7-5), and gave the Cougars the edge heading into singles play. Play on court No. 3 went unfinished.
The Greyhounds would snag the first three singles matches at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5. However, Azusa Pacific came right back. Sam Sippel put the Cougars within one point by winning at No. 2 by the final score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The match was all-tied at 3-3, when Velicki secured his three-set victory at No. 6 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. The contest would have to be decided on court No. 1. Ryan Nuno took down the No. 27 ranked Division II singles player in Tom Zeuch. Zeuch took the first set from Nuno 6-3. Nuno, who is ranked No. 20 ranked in Division II, went on to secure the top-25 victory for the Cougars by taking the final sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific will look to take this momentum into their Saturday matchup against Colorado Mesa. The Cougars will be home on their court again, as the match is set to begin at 2:30 pm. Azusa Pacific improves to 9-4 on the season.
