Azusa Pacific bounced back from a defeat in doubles to win five of six singles matchups for a 5-2 win over Cal State Los Angeles.

AZUSA, Calif. - No. 7 Azusa Pacific defended its home court on Monday afternoon, defeating Cal State Los Angeles by a 5-2 score. With the win, the Cougars now have won four-consecutive matches against the Golden Eagles.

The Cougars found themselves in an early hole, after Cal State Los Angeles took two of three doubles matches for the lone doubles point. In the No. 1 matchup, Nora Liga and Madison Kane beat Sarah Olmos and Sakura Kurokawa 6-1 in the first match to finish, but the Golden Eagles won at No. 2 (6-4) and No. 3 (6-4) to take the 1-0 overall lead.

Liga and Kane were able to maintain their focus and confidence from their doubles win, as the two finished with wins in their singles matchups in back-to-back fashion to put the Cougars up 2-1 overall. Liga beat Noa Davico at the No. 1 spot in straight sets, winning each frame by a 6-1 score. Kane also won in straight set fashion (6-4, 6-0), with the second set highlighted by a game in which Kane scored three of four points via dominant service aces.

Behind a 6-2, 6-0 victory by Katherine Nguyen at No. 6, Azusa Pacific took a 3-1 match lead with just one more win needed to clinch the point. While Cal State Los Angeles was able to make it 3-2 with a win on the No. 4 court, Carolyn Brooner was able to clinch the match at No. 3. Brooner won the first set 6-1, and then sealed the match for Azusa Pacific with a 6-4 second set triumph.

Freshman Lilla Plasek added the fifth and final point of the match for the Cougars, winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 for her first win as a Cougar.

Through two matches this season against Division II opponents, Azusa Pacific has won 10 of 12 singles matchups in straight sets.

Up Next: The Cougars will head to Hawai'i this weekend, with matches scheduled for Friday against Hawai'i Pacific, and Saturday against Hawai'i Hilo. Friday will be a much anticipated match for both teams, as the Cougars beat Hawai'i Pacific in the PacWest Championship match last season for their first-ever conference title, while the Sharks came back to beat Azusa Pacific in the West region final a week later.
