Four Cougars Recognized on All-PacWest Teams

Azusa Pacific men's soccer had four players named to All-PacWest teams announced by the conference Wednesday.

Azusa Pacific men's soccer had four players named to All-PacWest teams which was announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon. Gregoire Diep and Marco Astorga were named to the first team, while Joseph Macpherson and Fritz Oestreicher were recognized on the second team. "We are proud to have Grego, Marco, Joe and Fritz represent the team as All-PacWest selections." said head coach Dave Blomquist. "In a season of ups and downs their play was at a consistently high level." Blomquist continued, "They all have an approach to training which enables them to excel in every game." 

ALL-PACWEST FIRST TEAM 

Diep earned his fourth consecutive recognition by the conference (second first team honor), making him the first player in program history to be named All-PacWest four times. His presence on the field contributed highly to the teams successes this season as he started all 18 games for the Cougars, playing every minute of every match. He recorded a team-high nine goals, while also leading the team in points (20), and shots on goal (21). He also recorded four game-winning goals and collected two assists on the season. In a victory over Hawaii Pacific, Diep recorded the first hat trick of his career, scoring the first three goals of the game. 

Astorga earned first team All-PacWest honors after being named to the third team last season. He was a key player for the Cougars offense, starting in all 18 games this season, totaling 1535 minutes on the pitch. He recorded four goals with two assists and ranked top-ten in the conference with 17 shots on goal. In a victory over Hawai'i Hilo, he recorded a brace with an assist, totaling five points in the match. 

ALL-PACWEST SECOND TEAM 

Macpherson tabbed his second all conference honors of his career, being named to the All-PacWest second team this season. At center back, he was a key player on the backline this season for the Cougars this season, starting in all 18 games, totaling 1613 minutes, only sitting out seven minutes of the entire season. He contributed to three clean sheets with 10 games where there was one or fewer goals scored against them. Offensively, he also contributed to the attack, scoring two goals with two assists and five shots on goal. 

Oestreicher earned his second All-PacWest second team honor of his career after playing in 17 games and starting in 14 on the pitch for the Cougars this season. At center back, he was also a strong presence on the backline for Azusa Pacific, contributing to three clean sheets and 10 games where opponents only scored one or fewer goals against them. In the Cougars offense, he was also a steady presence scoring two goals with five shots on goal. 

Blomquist will return Astorga and Oestreicher along with other experienced players that got significant time on the pitch this season as the program looks ahead to the 2023 season.
