SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific headed south for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with San Diego Christian, and the Cougars came away with a sweep, winning game on 8-5, followed by a game two victory of 10-3.
Â
GAME ONE: Azusa Pacific 8, San Diego Christian 5
Â
While the Cougars did not score in the first or second inning, there was certainly reason to believe that it was only a matter of time before they would put runs on the board. Amanda Woods hit a ground-rule double in the first at-bat of the day, which was the first of 14 hits the Cougars would have in game one. San Diego Christian escaped the first and second inning with two Azusa Pacific base runners stranded on base. The Cougars would threaten once again in the third, this time bringing a run around to score. Azusa Pacific took the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Becca Jewett, but once again SDCC limited the damage and the Cougars left the bases loaded. San Diego Christian would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
In the fourth inning, Azusa Pacific was finally able to put up a crooked number, scoring four runs to take a 5-0 lead. Aly Montesino delivered with a one-out, two RBI ground rule double, and she would eventually come across to score the third run of the inning on a Jewett RBI single. Jewett would then score the Cougars' fourth run of the inning when Katie Korstrom drove her in with a double to the gap in right center.Â
Â
Azusa Pacific would add on to its lead in the top of the sixth when Korstrom hit an RBI single that drove in Carley Gray, and then the Cougars would tack on even more insurance in the top of the seventh when Woods launched a two-run home run to centerfield that made it 8-1.Â
Â
San Diego Christian would score four runs in its half of the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late.
Â
Not only was Korstrom 2-for-4 with 2 RBI at the plate in game one, but she also picked up the win in the circle, as the Canadian freshman was the Cougars' starting pitcher pitched, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings of work. Montesino, who was the PacWest Freshman of the Week last week, came on in the seventh inning to record her first collegiate save.Â
Â
GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 10, San Diego Christian 3
Â
In the second game of the day, it was SDCC who got off to a quick start. Following a top of the first for the Cougars in which they went down in order, the Hawks struck for three runs in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on three Azusa Pacific errors and two hits. That inning would end up being the only one in which SDCC would score.Â
Â
The Cougars got one back in the second, as Dani Burghardt sent a ball out to right field for a solo shot that made it 3-1. Burghardt struck again in the top of the fourth, as she sent her second ball of the day over the fence for solo home run, this time down the right field line.
The comeback continued in the top of the fifth inning, as the Cougar offense exploded for five runs on six hits. Montesino opened the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI single, followed by a RBI single from Annie Gutierrez, a Keelie Koepp RBI via an error by the Hawks, and then an infield RBI single from Ally Chin which made the score 7-2.Â
Â
Azusa Pacific would add three more runs in the top of the seventh for good measure, as Olivia Smith, Brielle Fraijo and Montesino each had an RBI in the frame.Â
Â
In game two, it was Montesino who bounced back from a tough first inning in the circle to throw a complete-game and pick up her second win (2-0) of the season. She did most of her damage via strikeout, finishing with nine on the day. Only one of the three runs in the first inning was earned, and she allowed more than one baserunner to reach in just two of the five innings.
UP NEXT: The Cougars (6-2) return home for a Friday night doubleheader with Saint Katherine. The games will be at 4:00 & 6:00 pm, and will be live streamed on Cougars All-Access.
