Scoreless Stretch Too Much to Overcome

No. 20 Azusa Pacific fell 10-5 to No. 15 San Diego State on Wednesday afternoon in Azusa.

AZUSA, Calif. -- No. 20 Azusa Pacific fell 10-5 to No. 15 San Diego State on Wednesday afternoon. Skylar Ford had two goals and an assist, while Milena Guzmán Ortiz, Britni Tisdale and Shyanne Rainey scored one goal apiece. Defensively, Tisdale finished with four steals, and Guzmán Ortiz & Maritza Ochoa added two each. Olivia Lott played all 32 minutes in goal for the Cougars, tallying 11 saves.

 

How it Happened: Azusa Pacific jumped ahead early to start the day, as Tisdale found the back of the cage less than 40 seconds in to make 1-0. 20 seconds later, the Aztecs evened the score with a goal from Lucia Carballo. The Cougars took the lead back at the 4:57 mark in the first quarter, when Guzmán Ortiz scored. Azusa Pacific would not score again until the third quarter.

 

San Diego State would score seven unanswered goals over the remainder of the first half and into the third quarter, allowing the Aztecs to grab a commanding 8-2 lead. Ford broke the scoreless drought for the Cougars, scoring at 3:55 on the clock in the third. Both teams would add two goals in the fourth period.

 

By the Numbers: The Aztecs outshot the Cougars 30-27, and finished 4-for-5 on power play opportunities (.800). Azusa Pacific had six power play chances, but only capitalized on one. Gabrielle Martinez won all four sprints for the Cougars. 

 

Up Next: The Cougars (3-4 overall, 2-3 GCC) are back in the pool on Friday, April 2, when they visit Golden Coast Conference opponent No. 13 Pacific at 2:00 pm. The Tigers enter the matchup with a 6-2 overall record, and a perfect 4-0 conference line.
