Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

No. 11 Bulldogs Best Cougars

Cougars fall on the road against Golden Coast Conference favorite Fresno State.

FRESNO, Calif. – The Cougar water polo team faced its second-straight top-20 battle Saturday, falling to 11th-ranked Fresno State by a final of 16-6 Saturday afternoon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

How It Happened:  Shyanne Rainey scored her first collegiate goal 90 seconds into the game to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  The Bulldogs would respond in force, scoring the next four goals of the game and taking the lead for good.  Rainey would add a second later in the period, and on the Cougars' next possession Gabrielle Martinez would add the first of her two goals to close the gap to 5-3.  Fresno State's defense would stiffen after that, holding the Cougars to just a single tally over the next two quarters of the contest while methodically pulling away.

By the Numbers: Rainey ended up with a hat trick, while Martinez scored twice for the Cougars, who have scored eight first-quarter goals in two games this season.  Milena Guzmán Ortiz had the remaining Cougar goal, her team-leading fifth of the season.  Guzmán Ortiz also had five of Azusa Pacific's 12 drawn ejections in the game. The Cougars went 0-6 on the power play against Fresno State, while the Bulldogs had two goals in six chances themselves.  Fresno State outshot the Cougars for the game, 30-23.  In goal for the Cougars, Olivia Lott and Hannah Murray split time, with Lott tallying nine saves and Murray finishing with seven.

Coach Julie Snodgrass' Thoughts: "All and all, we grew as a team and adapted to the changes we needed to make from the first to second half. I'm proud of the performance because of the small steps of growth, and with such a short training segment before this game we still have plenty of adjustments we can make as a team and these girls are showing they are up for the challenge."

Up Next: 20th-ranked Azusa Pacific (1-1, 1-1 GCC) wraps up a two-game road trip with a visit to Riverside to take on long-time rival California Baptist (currently ranked 22nd) on Thursday.  It is the third consecutive game the Cougars will play against a nationally-ranked opponent.
