Day One Recap: UCCS Pre-Holiday Invitational

Provisional marks and personal bests highlighted day one of the UCCS Pre-Holiday Invitational for Azusa Pacific track & field.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Azusa Pacific opened up two days of competition at the UCCS Pre-Holiday Invitational on Friday, and the Cougars saw athletes hit provisional marks, win events, and set new personal bests on day one.

Multis: Three Cougars competed in the pentathlon, and Lincoln Krog is Azusa Pacific's lone representative in the heptathlon.

All three Cougars in the pentathlon met the provisional standard of 3,258 points, led by Alysa Henry's second place finish with 3,627 points, which is the highest pentathlon point total of her career. Nicole Warwick finished in third place (3,566 points), and Luisa Fischer was fifth (3,264 points). Henry's big day was highlighted by a personal best in the long jump, where she leaped a distance of 5.85m, which was the second longest distance of the competition. She also had a strong showing in the high jump, an event in which she tied for second with Fischer, at a height of 1.64m. Warwick finished top-three in three of the five events, including a third place finish in the shot put with an indoor personal best of 11.79m, which was near her lifetime personal record of 11.81m. Fischer, who made her collegiate debut this weekend, not only had a second place finish alongside Henry in the high jump, but she also posted the fourth-longest distance in the shot put at 11.52m.

Through four of the seven heptathlon events, Krog is in third place overall with 2,864 points. Krog finished in the top three in all four events, including an indoor personal best effort in the shot put, where he took third at 11.79m. In the long jump, Krog reached the second furthest distance of the day, landing at 6.85m. Tomorrow, Krog will seek to hit provisional status (needs at least 1,889 points), with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000 meter run scheduled to occur.

Field Events: On the women's side, Azusa Pacific was represented in one field event, which was the pole vault. Not only were the Cougars represented in the event, but it was a Cougar that finished atop the final standings, as Sara Wagenveld achieved an indoor personal best and provisional clearance of 3.89m to win.

Jermel Jones II was the highlight of the day for the Cougars in the men's field events, as he not only won the long jump competition with a provisional leap of 7.65m, but the mark is Jones' lifetime best performance. In the same event, Isaiah Harris also set a new lifetime record, reaching 7.24m. In the pole vault, Joseph Rauwerda competed in his first collegiate meet, clearing 4.33m and taking fourth place.

Track Events: For the women's team on the track, Mechaela Hyacinth and Jaylah Walker opened their indoor seasons in impressive fashion. In the 60 meter dash prelims, Hyacinth ran a provisional and personal best time of 7.31 seconds, which clinched her a spot in the finals tomorrow. Walker ran two events on Friday, winning the 200 meters with a time of 25.31 seconds, and setting a new personal best in the 60 meter hurdle prelims, posting a provisional time of 8.79 seconds.

Nikolas Trofort started off his indoor season with a 60 meter time of 7.01 seconds, which clinched him a spot in tomorrow's finals. In the 200 meters, Azusa Pacific's top finisher was freshman Dominic Gonzalez-Shelmire, who turned in a time of 22.74 seconds for a fourth-place finish in his first collegiate race.
