AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific fell to 2-2 after its second straight loss to conference opponent Concordia, falling by a 75-67 score on Saturday.
Molly Whitmore had a double-double with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, finishing 8-for-11 from the field.
Kelly Heimburger continued her impressive freshman campaign with 11 points, 10 boards and three assists.
Kayla Shaw was the third Cougar in double digits with 12 points, eight of which were scored in the second quarter.
Paige Uyehara had a team-high eight assists, and did not commit a turnover in the second half.
How It Happened: The Cougars began the game by trailing 14-16 following the end of the first quarter.
Molly Whitmore got off to a quick start by putting up eight of the Cougar's 14 points in the first 10 minutes of play. Both teams picked up some pace on the offensive end in the second quarter, with the Eagles going 7-for-14 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from three, and Azusa Pacific shot 47% (8-for-17) from the field with three made triples. Concordia outscored the Cougars by a 23-19 margin in the second, allowing the Eagles to take a 39-33 lead into the break. The third quarter belonged to the Cougars, as the hosts grabbed the momentum of the contest and outscored Concordia 24-13, forcing the Eagles to shoot just 5-for-16 from the field while going 9-for-18 on the offensive. Heimburger had a big quarter for the Cougars, pouring in 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting. After three quarters of play, Azusa Pacific had jumped out to a 57-52 advantage. Concordia would battle back in the fourth quarter.
Turning Point: While Azusa Pacific entered the third with momentum on its side, the Eagles responded and flipped the script of the game in the final quarter. Concordia outscored the Cougars 23-10 over the final 10 minutes, combining a potent offensive attack with suffocating defense. The Eagles went 7-for-10 in the fourth, including 3-for-4 from three, while the Cougars went cold and shot 4-for-14.
By the Numbers: The Eagles posted significant advantages in both three-point shooting and points in the paint. Concordia shot 11-for-22 (50%) from downtown, while Azusa Pacific shot just 6-for-18 (33.3%) from three. In the lane, the Eagles outscored the Cougars by a 38-20 margin. At the charity stripe, the Eagles were 14-for-15 (93.3%) from the line while the Cougars shot 9-for-12 (75%). Additionally, in the dominant fourth quarter run by the Eagles, the visitors went a perfect 6-for-6 on their free throws.
Up Next: The Cougars (2-2) take on Point Loma for the first time this season next Friday (Feb. 5) at home. The following day, the Cougars will travel to Point Loma for a 2:00 pm tip-off. The Sea Lions will enter the weekend's game with a 4-1 record.
