Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Almost Is Never Enough

Cougars fight to the final seconds, come up just short against Point Loma.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific took Point Loma down to the wire Friday in Azusa, falling 93-91 at the Felix Event Center.  Kayla Shaw had 25 points and 6 assists to lead the way, while Alex Lowden put up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Molly Whitmore added 17 points and 7 rebounds of her own.

How it Happened – The Cougars jumped out to an early 20-8 lead behind a couple of early three-point shots from Lowden and Shaw.  Point Loma slowly chipped away at the advantage, eventually taking the lead briefly in the second quarter before a 10-2 run by Azusa Pacific gave the home team a seven-point advantage at halftime.  Point Loma would again close the gap in the third quarter, frequently at the foul line, and would regain the advantage at 68-67 going into the fourth quarter, setting the stage for a frantic final ten minutes of a game that saw 15 lead changes and 8 ties overall.

Turning Point – The game turned not so much on any individual play so much as an individual player, namely the Sea Lions' freshman guard Ellie Turk, who sliced through the Azusa Pacific defense at will for large stretches of the game, scoring 26 points on 9-16 shooting from the field.  10 of her 26 points came in the final quarter, a stretch where neither team would lead by more than 5 at any point.  The Sea Lions took the lead for good with 2:11 to play, and while the Cougars would cut the lead to a single point with 10 seconds left and have the ball with a chance to tie, they were unable to score on their final possession.

By the Numbers – The Sea Lions enjoyed a sizable advantage at the free throw line, making 21-26 on the afternoon and making more free throws by halftime (12) than the Cougars would get to attempt the entire game (11).  Turk's impressive game comprised the bulk of a 50-21 advantage for the visitors in bench scoring as well, enabling the Sea Lions to overcome their 15 turnovers despite only forcing 7 by the Cougars.  The 93 points Point Loma scored are the most the Cougars have allowed in regulation since February of 2006.

Up Next – The Cougars (2-3, 2-3 PacWest) will make the return trip to San Diego to play Point Loma (5-1, 4-1) tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., then turn around and head north to Fresno Pacific for what will be a non-conference game against the Sunbirds on Tuesday.
