KANEOHE, Hawai'i – It took longer than they would have liked, but the Azusa Pacific softball team finally got into the win column in PacWest Play Wednesday afternoon, earning a split of their doubleheader at Hawai'i Pacific, shutting out the Sharks in the opener by a 2-0 scoreline before falling 9-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 2, Hawai'i Pacific 0
All the scoring occurred in the top of the first inning. After the first two batters got on base to start the game,i
Amanda Woods laid down a sacrifice bunt and a subsequent error by the Sharks allowed
Emily Moran to score from second base.
Becca Jewett followed with an RBI single to drive in
Olivia Smith to stake the Cougars to a two-run lead.
Kat Ung would make that lead stand up the entire way, throwing a four-hit shutout to earn her third victory of the season. The senior southpaw struck out three batters while walking just one. Right fielder
Ashley Kincaid would collect two hits at the plate, the only Cougar with multiple hits in the game.
Game 2: Hawai'i Pacific 9, Azusa Pacific 1 (6 innings)
After being stymied the entirety of the opening game, the Sharks' bats awoke in the second game, exploding for 12 hits against the Cougars. The one bright spot for Azusa Pacific came in the third inning, when starting pitcher
Elizabeth Phillips doubled to lead off the inning and would score on a two-out hit by Woods. That cut the deficit at the time to 2-1, but Hawai'i Pacific would keep the Cougars at bay the rest of the afternoon, adding an insurance run in the 5
th inning before breaking out for six in the sixth to end the game. Woods went 2-3 with the RBI in Game 2.
With the split, Hawai'i Pacific took three out of four games in the series. The Cougars now sit at 5-12 overall, 1-7 in PacWest play. Their Hawaiian road trip will continue tomorrow when they open up a four-game series with Chaminade.
