Phillips & Ung Stifle Silverswords

Elizabeth Phillips and Kat Ung both threw complete game shutouts to defeat host Chaminade on Thursday.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Azusa Pacific picked up two wins on Thursday at Chaminade, as the Cougars did not surrender a run on the day.

Game 1: Azusa Pacific 2, Chaminade 0
In the first game of the day, the Cougars relied on an outstanding effort from Elizabeth Phillips in the circle, and small ball late to pick up their second victory of the road trip. Phillips picked up her third win of the season with a complete game shutout, as she faced few stressful situations and limited Chaminade to six hits and a total of just seven baserunners. The only real trouble Phillips faced came in the bottom of the third inning, when the Silverswords had runners on second and third with just one out. Chaminade's Malia Moisa came to the plate looking to break a scoreless tie, but Phillips quickly got the count to 0-2, and she then ended the inning by forcing Moisa into a lineout double play. Phillips would only allow three runners over the remainder of the game, with two coming in the bottom of the sixth, but she was able to strand the runners at first and second base.

Offensively, the Cougars scored both of their runs off of bunt singles. The first run of the game came in the fifth inning. Makeila Laulu started things off with a leadoff double, and she was promptly moved up to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Kincaid. Laulu came in to score and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead during the next at-bat, as Brielle Fraijo laid down an RBI bunt single to the pitcher. Azusa Pacific would add its second run in the sixth inning, via a bunt single by Jenna Gorman that forced a throwing error from the Chaminade pitcher that allowed Amanda Woods to score all the way from first base on the play. The Cougars finished with eight hits in the contest, with two apiece from Woods and Gorman.

Game 2: Azusa Pacific 5, Chaminade 0
Kat Ung picked up right where Phillips left off, as the senior turned in yet another solid outing for the Cougars with another complete game shutout of the Silverswords. Ung sat down 11 hitters she faced by way of a strikeout, including all three hitters who came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, as she punched them out 1-2-3 to earn her fourth win of the season. She scattered five hits over seven innings, and did not walk anyone.

While the Cougars were held scoreless through the first five innings, the offense showed up in the later innings to grab the victory. Azusa Pacific struck for three runs in the top half of the sixth inning, and added two insurance runs in the seventh. In the sixth, the first four Cougars to the plate recorded a hit. Gorman led off with a single, followed by another single by Becca Jewett that advanced Gorman to second base. The bases were then loaded with no outs, off of a single by Dani Burghardt. Laulu then came to the plate for the Cougars, and she took advantage of the opportunity in a big way, connecting on the first pitch she saw to rope a ball to center field that resulted in a two-RBI double. Azusa Pacific pushed the lead up to 3-0 off of a ball hit by Fraijo that ended the inning as a double play, but Burghardt was able to score before the second out was recorded on the play.

In the seventh inning, the Cougars added their fourth and fifth runs of the contest off of a two-out, two-RBI single by Becca Jewett. Azusa Pacific finished with nine hits in game two, as Jewett and Emily Moran each had two hits, while five others also tallied a hit in the win.
