FULLERTON, Calif. – Azusa Pacific opened up the 2020 season at Division I Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday afternoon, and the Cougars lost the match 5-2.

In doubles, CS Fullerton grabbed the 1-0 match lead behind dominant performances all three matchups. #1 doubles ended 6-1, while #2 doubles ended 6-2. #3 doubles went unfinished, but the Cougars were trailing 1-4.

Despite losing the match overall, Azusa Pacific picked up two points in singles, and threatened to grab a third point.
Petra Ivankovic and
Katia Betancourt picked up victories in their matchups, while
April Wong forced a third set. Ivankovic played in the #2 spot, winning 6-4 and 7-5. Betancourt had to go three sets to win her matchup in the #5 spot, going 6-4, 2-6, and winning the tiebreak 10-7. Wong nearly picked up a point in the #4 spot, as she fell behind 0-1 (2-6), battled back to tie it at 1-1 (6-3), but eventually fell 8-10 in a tiebreak.

"It's never fun to lose, but we had some bright spots in singles," said head coach
Mark Bohren, "being that it was our first match, it pretty much went how I expected."

The Cougars now turn their attention towards their home opener and first Division II opponent, Point Loma. The match is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 8.
