Senior Day Sweep Sets Up Showcase Showdown

Azusa Pacific has won 25 of its past 27 games, and Wednesday's visit to Point Loma to close out the regular season will be featured on the NCAA Division II Showcase

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific took another step towards securing a host bid for the upcoming NCAA Division II West Regionals, smashing eight home runs in a 10-1, 8-3 doubleheader sweep over Point Loma Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars moved into a tie for the Division II lead in home runs by a team (83) with Oklahoma Baptist University, and junior outfielder Cole Kleszcz led the way with three homers as he moved into second in Division II with 22.

Justin Gomez was also 2-for-4 in both games of the sweep, extending his hitting streak to 14 games while reaching safely in 25 straight to lift his season batting average to .329.

A.J. Woodall tossed eight strong innings in the 10-1 opening-game win, starting with seven shutout frames before Point Loma pushed a single run across in the eighth. Woodall finished with six strikeouts and picked up the win to improve to 7-2 on the season. Nick Estrella earned the victory in Game 2, striking out nine in six innings of work to improve to 9-1 with a 3.35 ERA this season.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 36-11 overall and 26-4 in conference play. After dropping the first three games of a non-conference series with Point Loma earlier this year to fall to 11-9 through the first 20 games, the Cougars have since won 25 of their past 27 games to cruise to the program's third consecutive PacWest title.

What's Next: The Cougars visit Carroll B. Land Stadium, "America's Most Scenic Ballpark," for a Wednesday, May 8 doubleheader at Point Loma to conclude the regular season. The doubleheader was selected last week as the NCAA Division II Showcase, featuring a live video stream produced by the NCAA and available through NCAA Division II and Azusa Pacific Athletics' Facebook pages. The first pitch for the opening game is 12:05 p.m., while the second game is scheduled for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch.

Postseason Picture: Sometime during Wednesday's doubleheader, another set of the NCAA's regional rankings will be released. The regional rankings determine at-large selections and tournament seeding for the upcoming six-team NCAA Division II West Regional Championship. In this year's format, the regional championship participants will be determined by three-team tournaments held at two separate sites May 16-18, with the winners of each three-team tournament meeting a week later (May 24-25) in a best-of-three series to determine the West Region champion. The eight regional champions advance to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, North Carolina (May 29-June 5).

How It Happened (Game 1): The Cougars scored first in both games, as Kleszcz led off the opener with a single to center before he later scored from second on a Justin Gomez one-out single through the right side. Freshman first baseman Tido Robles extended the lead to 2-0 with a fourth-inning solo home run, Casey Dykstra went back-to-back with Kleszcz for consecutive solo home runs to lead off the fifth inning and make it a 4-0 margin.

Kleszcz led off the bottom of the seventh with another solo home run, his second of the game and 21st of the season, and Joe Quire Jr. added a three-run shot later in the frame to make it 8-0. Point Loma scored its only run in the top of the eighth on Micah Pries' sacrifice fly, but the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs off reliever Connor Barrett in the bottom of the eight to push the lead to the final 10-1 spread.

Kleszcz, Griffen Herrera, and Joseph Kim each recorded three hits, while Gomez added a pair of singles.

How It Happened (Game 2): Azusa Pacific jumped out to an early lead again, this time with a three-run opening frame as Kleszcz drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Griffen Herrera plated him with a single to left. Gomez followed with a two-run home run to right-center to cap a three-run first.

Micah Pries answered in the top of the third, getting all three runs back for Point Loma starting pitcher Stirling Strong with a three-run home run down the right-field line. The three-run shot was Pries' 18th home run of the season, but an inning later the Cougars regained the lead for good on Joe Quire Jr.'s one-out RBI double.

Two innings later, Kleszcz delivered a three-run home run to extend the lead to 7-3, and Joseph Kim provided the eighth home run of the day for Azusa Pacific when he led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo shot to right field.

Estrella left the game with a 7-3 lead after six innings, and John Szczesny tossed one scoreless frame before David Wylie fired two shutout innings with three strikeouts to close out the win.
