Azusa, Calif.-- The No. 15 APU women's tennis team got stuck with its second 4-3 loss of the season as the Cougars were upended by visiting #37 UC San Diego at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts. APU snagged the doubles point before UCSD fought back to string up a trio of three-set victories and eventually clinched the match at the No. 6 spot to seal the win. The cougars are now 10-7 on the season.
The Cougars got off to a strong start in doubles play as the tandem of
Jacky Wagner and
Kara Hinton edged out their opponents at the top spot 6-3 before
Audrey Stewart and
Petra Ivankovic clinched the doubles point shortly after with a 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position. Â
With a 1-0 lead, the Cougars held the same momentum as they headed into singles play. At the No. 5 spot,
April Wong pulled out a 6-4, 6-0 win before
Petra Ivankovic locked up a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 1 position. With a 3-0 lead, UCSD bounced back with a 6-2, 6-3 win over APU's
Jacky Wagner to seal its first point of the afternoon. At the No. 3 spot,
Anna Savchenko lost 6-2, 6-1 before senior
Kara Hinton received a 2-6, 6-4, 1-6 deficit at the No. 2 slot. With all eyes at court six, UCSD's Shweta Kumar topped
Mikayla Rinker with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 win to clinch the match.
APU's next action takes the Cougars on a road trip to Cal State L.A., where APU will face the Golden Eagles in a clash on Wednesday April, 10 with a 1:30 p.m. matchup
