Cougars Fall To Top-Ranked Barry

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific returned to the court Saturday morning to challenge NCAA Division II's No. 1-ranked Barry, but the No. 12-ranked Cougars dropped the doubles point on a tiebreaker and lost the next three points in singles in a 4-0 defeat to the Buccaneers.

With the loss, the Cougars currently sit 5-4 overall this season, with two losses coming against NCAA Division I opponents and the other two against programs ranked among the top four of Division II.

The Cougars walked away from doubles with their only victory of the day courtesy of Kara Hinton and Jacky Wagner, who beat the Buccaneers with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position. The tandem of Anna Savchenko and April Wong came up short at the No. 2 slot, 6-4. Audrey Stewart and Petra Ivankovic lost in a tough 7-6 (7-4) battle at the No. 3 spot to give Barry its first point of the day.

In singles, Azusa Pacific dropped three matches to Barry while three matches were unfinished. Kara Hinton dropped a 6-0, 6-2 verdict at the No. 2 singles position, and Audrey Stewart fell at No. 6, 6-0, 6-4. The Buccaneers clinched the match with Jill Engelmann's 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 3 slot over Anna Savchenko.

In unfinished matches, April Wong was one game away from a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, but the match concluded with Wong holding a 6-3, 5-3 lead in her singles match.

The Cougars return to action at home on Tuesday March 12, taking on Western New Mexico at 2:00 p.m.
