SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific dropped the first two games of a four-game non-conference set with Point Loma Friday afternoon, falling by a 5-1 score in the opener before dropping the nightcap, 4-1. The Cougars will host the remaining two games of the series in Azusa on Saturday.
Azusa Pacific left a total of 16 runners on base in the two games and only scored two runs in the doubleheader. Osvaldo Tovalin continued his hot start to the year as he had five of the 15 hits for the Cougars on the day and was 5-for-7 on the day.
How It Happened (Game 1): Osvaldo Tovalin got things started in the top of the fourth inning, leading things off with a solo home run to dead center field. Griffen Herrera followed that up with a double on the next pitch before Cole Kleszcz reached on an error to make it first and second with nobody out. Justin Gomez bunted into a fielder's choice to the pitcher that got the lead runner out at third for the first out of the inning before Will Stroud and Joe Quire Jr. struck out to end the threat.
In the eighth inning, the Cougars worked the bases loaded with one out. Tovalin led off with a single and Herrera lined out to right for the first out before Kleszcz singled and Gomez reached on an error to load the bases. Stroud flew out to shallow left field before pinch hitter Evan Banks ended the inning with a strikeout. That was the story of the first game as the Cougars left a total of nine runners on base.
Griffen Herrera went 2-for-4 with a single and a double, while Tovalin was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, single and a walk. Starting pitcher A.J. Woodall picked up the loss after throwing six innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits. He gave up a two-run home run in the fourth inning that saw Point Loma take the lead and keep it the rest of the game. The Sea Lions tacked on two more runs (one earned) against Woodall in the fifth before he finished strong with a scoreless sixth to end his outing. Ricky Rivera pitched a scoreless seventh before Point Loma added one final insurance run off Hayden Jorgensen in the eighth inning for a final score of 4-1.
How It Happened (Game 2): Point Loma took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, putting up three earned runs against starting pitcher James Acuña, who threw four innings in the contest. The Cougars' offense was stagnant again in the second game, gathering seven hits in all, with five of them coming from Osvaldo Tovalin and Cole Kleszcz. Tovalin was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run, and Kleszcz went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the eighth that plated Tovalin for Azusa Pacific's only run in the game.
The Cougar bullpen threw four innings in relief in the second game, surrendering just one run. Tayton Smith threw 1.2 innings in relief and was responsible for the lone earned run, and after that Kenneth Pettibone threw 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a baserunner. David Wylie tossed a scoreless eighth. Mychael Goudreau led off the fifth with a single down the left field line before Joe Quire Jr. lined a single up the middle, but both were stranded there.
