Box Score Azusa, Calif.-- The No. 25 APU men's tennis team chalked up a big upset, toppling No. 21 Hawai'i Hilo 4-3 in a long five hour battle at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars grabbed the doubles point before battling out singles to claim a nail biting victory on
Leyton Bohren's three-set comeback on court four. With the victory, the Cougars improve 17-1 on the season.
APU looked to be in command in doubles play, picking up a speedy 6-3 win from
Ethan Smith and
Ronald Kang on court three before the tandem of
Jesse Haas and
Jakob Schnaitter posted a 7-5 victory at the top spot. The Cougars continued to finish out doubles with
Ryan Nuno and
Leyton Bohren topping their opponents 7-6 (4) to pocket a 1-0 lead.
Hawai'i Hilo jumped out in doubles with two quick wins, as Martin Soukal topped
Ronald Kang at the No.3 spot in both sets 6-4 before Alessandro Giuliato downed APU's
Ryan Nuno 3-6, 1-6 at the No. 2 position. For the Cougars,
Marnix Pluim answered with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Arturo Dell'eva at the No. 6 slot to even up the score 2-2. At the top spot, No. 13
Jakob Schnaitter came out victorious with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win against No. 21 Vaclav Slezak. Luca Checchia for Hawai'i Hilo topped
Jesse Haas with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at court five before sending all eyes to court four. In a match of great shooting,
Leyton Bohren came back in a three-set tiebreaker to clinch the 4-3 victory over Chun En Wu 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2) where his teammates immediately rushed the court to celebrate.
