Azusa, Calif. -- APU men's tennis team had a strong showing on the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts as the team won both of the matches of its Saturday (March 16) doubleheader. The No. 11 Cougars beat Daemen 7-0 and Colorado Mesa 7-0. APU now holds a 12-1 season record and is riding a five-match winning streak.
In their first match against Daemen, the Cougars started off strong as
Ryan Nuno and
Leyton Bohren won at the No. 2 position 6-1. The Cougar tandem of
Jakob Schnaitter and
Jesse Haas went for a perfect 6-0 match at the top spot to claim the doubles point.
The Cougars entered singles holding the momentum of the match. Freshman
Ethan Smith took that momentum and struck first going 6-0 in both sets at the No. 6 spot before
Ryan Nuno defeated his opponent at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-2 to notch another point on the board for the Cougars.
Jesse Haas won at the No. 3 slot 6-0, 6-2 while teammate
Dillon Barnard claimed the victory at the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-3. At the No. 5 spot,
Ian Lee won 6-0, 6-3 while
Roberto Luconi wrapped things up at the No. 6 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
APU's second match of the day was against Colorado Mesa.
The Cougars entered doubles winning its first two matches with 6-3 wins at courts three one and two. The tandem of
Ethan Smith and
Ronald Kang won the No. 3 position 6-3, while teammates
Jakob Schnaitter and
Jesse Haas defeated their opponents 6-3 to seal the doubles point.
At the top spot,
Jakob Schnaitter blasted through his match 6-1, 6-0 to being singles adding another point to the Cougar's score. Finishing right behind was
Ryan Nuno at the No. 2 slot with a 6-1, 6-2 win, and
Leyton Bohren at the No. 3 position with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory.
Jesse Haas dominated at the No. 4 spot defeating his opponent in both sets 6-2, while teammate
Dillon Barnard won at the No. 6 slot 6-3, 6-0.
Roberto Luconi finished the match with a hard fought 7-5, 5-7, 10-2 victory to end the Cougar's perfect day.
The Cougars will be back at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts Tuesday, March 19 for a 2:30 p.m. match against Nebraska-Omaha.
