LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific won its fifth consecutive match against NCAA Division II West Region rival UC San Diego, as the No. 13-ranked Cougars dispatched the Tritons, 4-2, in just over two hours Friday afternoon.
Azusa Pacific won matches in the top two positions of both singles and doubles in the win.
Results
Doubles: The Cougars took an early edge in doubles with Jesse Haas and Jakob Schnaitter claiming a quick 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Leyton Bohren and Ryan Nuno picked up a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. At No. 3, Ronald Kang and Ethan Smith held a 5-4 lead when the doubles point was clinched.
Singles: UC San Diego pulled even in the match when Neil Tengbumroong gave the Tritons the first win of singles play at No. 3, but Schnaitter made quick work of Marc Isaia at No. 1 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. After UC San Diego pulled even again with a No. 6 singles victory from Sreeganesh Manoharan, Azusa Pacific regained the lead when Jesse Haas posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Ryan Nuno finished off the match with another straight-sets victory at the No. 2 position, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Sahm Irvine to finish off the team win. Boren won a first-set tiebreaker and was tied in the second set (3-3) when Nuno's win clinched the team victory.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific stays on the road in the San Diego area with a Saturday match at Point Loma starting at 2:00 p.m.
