Three Cougars were named All-Americans this week, as sophomore
Isaac Bawa, junior
James Ndubueze and senior
Arturo Astorga were recognized nationally for their achievements this season. Bawa was named first-team All-American by both United Soccer Coaches (USC) and the Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), while Ndubueze was a first-team selection by USC and a second-team performer by the D2CCA. Astorga was a first-team selection to the D2CCA All-American team.
Â
Bawa, the PacWest Player of the Year, anchored the Cougar defense all season, which allowed no more than one goal in 16 of Azusa Pacific's 19 matches, including eight shutouts. He also scored two goals this season, including a game-winning golden goal against Hawai'i Hilo which preserved the Cougars' undefeated season at the time. Ndubueze finished the season tied for third in the nation with 18 goals on the year. He also had five game-winning goals for the Cougars. In addition to his goal scoring, Ndubueze had two assists. Astorga, who was named an All-American for the second consecutive year, was a key piece of the Cougar attack all season, as he finished with 10 goals and 11 assists, including five game-winning goals. He had a goal or an assist in 13 of Azusa Pacific's matches this year.
Â
The trio of All-Americans lead Azusa Pacific to an 18-1 season, along with the program's second consecutive PacWest championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars made history this season, as they became the first team in PacWest history to finish the regular season undefeated. Azusa Pacific also held the top spot in the national rankings for seven consecutive weeks.
Â
While Azusa Pacific graduates several key contributors, including Astorga, the Cougars return many crucial performers and will reload with new talent, as they set out to secure their third consecutive PacWest crown and trip to the NCAA postseason in 2020.
