Azusa Pacific, winners of all 18 of its matches this season, was well represented in the regional and conference awards that were announced this week. The top-ranked team in the nation had five student-athletes named to the D2CCA All-Regional teams, and 12 Cougars were chosen as All-PacWest performers.
D2CCA ALL-REGION
Three Cougars were named First Team All-West Region, as junior forward
James Ndubueze, senior midfielder
Arturo Astorga, and sophomore defender
Isaac Bawa garnered the distinction. Junior forward
David Kwinn and junior defender
Orlando Lozano earned Second Team All-West Region recognition.
Ndubueze finished the regular season tied for 6th in the nation with 17 goals, including five game-winners. Ndubueze scored at least one goal in 10 of the Cougars' 18 matches, and had multiple goals in six of those matches. Astorga enters the post season with 10 goals and 11 assists, which is the second consecutive year in which he has reached double-digits in both categories. Astorga scored a goal or had an assist in 13 of the Cougars' matches this season. Bawa served as the anchor for a Cougar defense that posted eight shutouts this season, and allowed no more than one goal in 16 of the 18 matches. He also scored two goals for the Cougars in the regular season, including a game-winning head against Hawai'i Hilo to keep the Cougars undefeated.
Kwinn finished the regular season with 13 goals and three assists including four game-winners. Kwinn scored in 10 of the Cougars matches this season. Lozano was another key piece of the Cougar defense and its eight shutouts, as he started and played all 18 matches and logged more 70 minutes in all but one match this season. Lozano also scored two goals and had an assist.
ALL-PACWEST
Having won 22 consecutive conference games over the past two seasons, Azusa Pacific's men's soccer team collected the lion's share of the end-of-season awards once again. Twelve different Cougars were named to the three all-PacWest teams, including eight first-team nominations.
The Cougars also took home nearly all of the individual awards, as Bawa was named the conference Player of the Year; Lozano won Defender of the Year; junior
Brendan Fix was named Goalkeeper of the Year; freshman forward
Daniel Osei-tutu earned Freshman of the Year honors; and
David Blomquist took home the PacWest Coach of the Year award for the second consecutive time and third overall.
Bawa, Ndubueze, and Astorga are each repeat first-team honorees. Joining those three on the first team are Kwinn, midfielders
Danillo Dias (7 assists) and
Bruno Pagani (2 goals, 4 assists), Lozano and Fix (10-0, 2 shutouts, 0.59 GAA), who all helped the Cougars outscore their opposition this season 59-13, including 40-6 in conference play.
Rounding out the Cougars' honors were second team midfield nominations
Renan Gomes (2 goals, 4 assists) and Jesse Echeverria (1 goal and 3 assists in only 540 minutes of action), and defender
Leo Tomasi (3 assists), while forward
Gregoire Diep (3 goals and 4 assists in 9 games) was named to the third team for the second season in a row.
Azusa Pacific finished the regular season at 18-0, earning the top seed in Super Region 4 and with it, the right to play at home in the NCAA tournament through the fourth round. After a first-round bye, the Cougars will open their postseason run on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer Complex against the winner of Thursday's first-round game between Colorado School of Mines and Texas A&M International.
