Vulcans Edge Cougars In Island Finale

HILO, Hawai'i -- A hopeful start to Azusa Pacific's three-game road trip to open Pacific West Conference play ended in a 2-1 setback to Hawai'i Hilo, leaving the Cougars with a win, tie, and a loss on the trip.

Haley Bostard scored in the 74th minute to cut the Vulcans' lead in half, 2-1, and give Azusa Pacific an opportunity for an equalizer. However, Hawai'i Hilo preserved the win by holding the Cougars without a shot the rest of the way.

Hawai'i Hilo opened the scoring in the 15th minute with Jaimie Salas finishing a give-and-go with Callye Lahmann for an early 1-0 lead, and just over 15 minutes into the second half, UHH took a 2-0 lead when Lucy Maino headed in a corner kick.

Emmy Koflanovich and Briana Haskins each put shots on goal in the 10 minutes that followed, forcing saves from Vulcan goalkeeper Bailey Cahill before Kaylee Nicoll's corner kick in the 74th minute was finished by a header from Bostard to cut the margin to 2-1.

Hawai'i Hilo finished with a 12-6 advantage in total shots, including an 8-1 margin in the opening half. The Cougars generated a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, with the last one rewarding Azusa Pacific with Bostard's goal. Isabelle Decker and Tatum French split the 90 minutes in goal and combined for seven saves on the day.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 1-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in PacWest play, while Hawai'i Hilo improves to 2-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the PacWest.

The Cougars return home to host Concordia in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Sept. 29.
