Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific women's soccer team lost a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker in a non-conference matchup against Concordia, which scored the game-winner in the 106th minute on a penalty kick.
Christine Messner scored the second-half equalizer on a long free kick midway through the second half, erasing a 1-0 halftime deficit and forcing overtime after the teams ended regulation tied at 1-1.
Concordia's first goal came with less than two minutes left in the first half, as the Eagles' seventh corner kick of the half produced Emma Lyon's first goal of the year when she deposited a loose ball into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box. Concordia had a good opportunity to double the lead with a 66th-minute penalty kick after a foul inside the penalty area. However, Carmany Jones' penalty shot sailed wide to the right of the goal to keep the Cougars within a goal.
The penalty kick miss turned the second-half momentum towards Azusa Pacific, and the Cougars capitalized to tie the game when Messner's shot on a free kick from 40 yards away got past the outstretched hand of Concordia goalkeeper Kaelyn Whitcomb in the 71st minute. Both teams produced several additional scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but neither team could find a game-winner as the game headed to overtime.
In overtime, Concordia had all three shots of the first 10-minute overtime period, and Azusa Pacific had one of the best chances at a game-winning golden goal with a fantastic run down the left side, which junior Kennedy Christie crossed to the front of the goal for a Kaylee Nicoll header just over the crossbar. Concordia's counterattack got into the penalty box, where the Cougars committed a foul which produced Jones' game-winning penalty kick.
With the defeat, Azusa Pacific is now 1-6-1 overall, while Concordia is now 3-3-1 on the year. The teams both compete in the Pacific West Conference, but Saturday's tilt was considered a non-conference game, as the teams will meet for their official PacWest contest on Oct. 24 in Irvine. The Cougars are back in action in a week, traveling to San Diego for another non-conference matchup against a PacWest opponent, Point Loma.
Sounds from the game: "Obviously, it's very frustrating, I feel like things are finally coming together. We're playing as a team, everyone's encouraging each other, and we're excited and happy to play, but we just have to get that final step and score (some) goals." -- senior defender Casey Thompson
"We're learning from our mistakes. We're getting our chances, and we just need to work on that final ball. We've done the hard part, now we just have to figure out how to put it in the back of the net more often." -- freshman defender Christine Messner
