LA JOLLA, Calif. – Closing out the regular season with a pair of crucial weekend contests, Azusa Pacific started the two-day stretch successfully.

Azusa Pacific used a great start propelling them to a 6-3 win against UC San Diego on Friday afternoon.

The victory for the No. 11 Cougars lifts their record to 17-6 heading into Saturday's match at Point Loma. With Friday's win against the Tritons, Azusa Pacific swept the season series with both wins coming by the same score.

With the top four teams qualifying for the NCAA Division II West Region postseason playoff match, the victory also helps solidify the Cougars No. 1 standing. Heading into the match UC San Diego was ranked third. The top four teams qualify for the playoff. Point Loma is listed in the fifth spot in the latest rankings.

DOUBLES: Azusa Pacific got a perfect start as they swept the three matches with the contest finishing in the order.

Toby Miclat and Petra Ivankovic walked off the courts with their fourth straight win at the No. 1 slot as they notched an 8-5 win. Diana Baumgartnere and Kara Hinton recorded their victory in the second position by the same tally for their sixth win together. Mikayla Rinker and Courtney Page completed the perfect scenario with an 8-4 tally at the third spot.  

SINGLES: With Azusa Pacific having a commanding lead in the team match UC San Diego made a solid attempt at the comeback.

Valeria Corral won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) against April Wong at the No. 5 position for the home teams first point. Miclat continued to show why she is one of the best players in the nation as she recorded her ninth win against a nationally ranked foe. The senior tallied a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 18 Ashley Chao.

Needing to win all the remaining matches, UC San Diego won the next two completed contests. Jamine Hosseini won a tight contest at the No. 4 spot 7-5, 6-4. Becky Chou tallied a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory at the second slot in a match-up of nationally ranked foes.

The final matches on the courts went the distance in their own unique way. Jackie Resler clinched the match with a pair of tiebreaker wins. The senior won 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) at the No. 6 slot to clinch the team match. Bamgartnere rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory to close out the contest.
