LA JOLLA, Calif. – In what is arguably one the best rivalries among west regional men's tennis programs, Azusa Pacific has nudged in front of what is regularly back-and-forth results.
The Cougars posted their third straight win against UC San Diego with a 6-3 victory under the lights on Friday evening.
Heading into the 2018 season, the two squads have traded team wins over the last five contest but the No. 12 Cougars have seemingly take a firm grip of the rivalry. Since 2015 one of the two programs have been one of the two NCAA west region representatives at the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Azusa Pacific closes out the regular season on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match at Point Loma.
DOUBLES: Changing up their doubles line-up a bit the Cougars posted a pair of wins.
Playing together for the first time this season, Oliver Frank and Jakob Schnaitter notched an 8-3 win at the top spot. Another new tandem got the Cougars second point as Christian Schmid and Antonio Pejic won 8-6 at the third slot.
UC San Diego's duo of Eric Teseng and Justin Zhang kept the Tritons in the contest with an 8-3 win at the second position.
SINGLES: Frank put together a solid 6-3, 6-1 win at the top slot for the Cougars third team point. Alan Leahy was nearly as good with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot.
Schnaitter clinched the team match with his 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 3 position against Marc Isaia. The final win came in comeback fashion as Ryan Nuno notched a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-7 win at the fifth slot.
The home team was able to grab three-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots.
