Cougars Handed First Setback of 2018

AZUSA, Calif. – The experience was a first for Azusa Pacific this season.

Hawai'i Hilo, the fifth ranked team in the nation, handed the Cougars their first loss of the season with a 7-2 victory on comfortable sunny Tuesday afternoon.

The loss moves No. 14 Azusa Pacific to 17-1 while the Vulcans up their record to 12-1.

DOUBLES: The tone for the match was set as each contest was high energy and intense until the last points were played. The Vulcans clearly took the momentum by winning the three matches.

The first contest complete was at the No. 3 position as Chun En Wu and Gregory Zukeran, the 31st ranked team in the nation, overcame a 4-3 deficit by winning four of the last five games. Moments later Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez won the final two games in recording their 8-6 win.

As close as those two contests were, the No. 1 match was tip-and-tuck. The 18th ranked duo of Alessandrio Giuliato and Vaclav Slezak prevailed 8-7 (4).

SINGLES: Looking for a near-miracle comeback, the Cougars battled until the last strokes.

OIiver Frank won his match-up between a pair of nationally ranked foes at the No. 1 slot in convincing fashion (6-1, 6-2). Another Cougars impressive win came from Jakob Schnaitter as he won his match 6-1, 6-3.

At the second position Giuliato kept Christian Schmid off balance in posting his 6-0, 6-3 win. Needing one more victory to secure the match, the No. 4 contest went the distance. Fillat Perez won the first set but Ronald Kang battled back. However, Filat Perez won the see-saw affair 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.

As the fifth and sixth matches got started, the team match was decided but each contest had its fair share of drama. Gregory Zukeran won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 slot while Arturo Dell'Eva battled for his 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win.

NEXT: The Cougars hosts Concordia in their final regular season home contest of the season. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
