FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cougars stepped up to the next level on Thursday afternoon.
Azusa Pacific saw its six-match winning streak come to an end with a 7-0 setback against NCAA Division I foe Cal State Fullerton. The match was played under NCAA Division I scoring rules.
The No. 9 Cougars move to 6-2 and have yet to drop a contest this season to a NCAA Division II school
DOUBLES: The Titans won the No. 2 and No. 3 contest in solid fashion by the respective scores of 6-1 and 6-2. The wins secured the doubles point for the home team as they took a 1-0 lead in the team contest.
At the top spot Diana Baumgartnere and Petra Ivankovic battled until the end but dropped a 7-5 decision.
SINGLES: Cal State Fullerton won each match in straight sets.
Sarah Nuno, who is the sister of Cougar men's tennis player Ryan, posted a 6-4, 6-4 win against Toby Miclat. For Miclat it was her first loss of the season in seven matches – all of which have come at the No. 1 slot.
Ivankovic lost her first 6-1 in the second position but battled well in the next frame before falling 7-6 (5). Karla Portalatin won her contest against Baumgartnere 6-0, 6-4 in the third spot.
Kara Hinton played the closest match during singles. The junior fell 7-5, 6-3 to Luxizi Meng in the No. 4 contest. April Wong (6-2, 6-4) and Jackie Resler (6-2, 6-2) were victims of the Titans in the last two singles spots.
