IRVINE, Calif. – It was a day of good news.
Before Thursday's match started the Azusa Pacific women's tennis team rose to No. 9 in the nation. Just hours after receiving the recognition, the Cougars went out a posted a 9-0 win at Concordia.
The program's previous NCAA high ranking was 13 which they accomplished in 2015 and 2016. Since dropping a tight season opener, the squad has reeled off six straight wins – including the last three on the road.
DOUBLES: The Cougars line-up has remained consistent. Since moving to their current pairings they have dropped just two of a possible 18 matches.
At the top position Diana Baumgartnere and Petra Ivankovic cruised to an 8-2 win. Toby Miclat and Kara Hinton had to fight a bit harder as the won 8-5 in the second position to remain undefeated together. In the No. 3 slot, Courtney Page and Mikayla Rinkler notched an 8-2 victory to remain a perfect together in six matches.
SINGLES: Miclat remained undefeated in singles play with a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win against Anastasiia Kuprina. For Miclat it was her third win against a nationally ranked foe. Kuprina won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region title in the fall and came into the contest ranked seventh in the nation.
Ivankovic was efficient against Ghazal Pakbaten in the No. 2 singles match. She posted a 6-2, 6-3 win against the region's runner-up and 16th ranked player in the country. Baumgartnere one-upped her teammate with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the third slot.
April Wong fought back from a first set loss to post her sixth win of the season with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position. The posted straight set win at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions with Jackie Resler (6-2, 6-4) and Tatiana Betancourt (7-6, 6-2) walking off their courts respectively with a triumph.
UP NEXT: The Cougars travel to NCAA Division I foe Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, March 1 for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
