AZUSA, Calif. – Looking to continue their momentum after posting a victory against a top 10 team on Thursday, the Azusa Pacific women's tennis accomplished just that.
The Cougars won a 6-3 decision in an important early season match-up against Point Loma on Saturday.
With the win they squad moves to 3-1 overall after the season's first week.
DOUBLES: Kara Hinton and Toby Miclat put together a solid performance at the No. 2 spot to give the Cougars the first win off the courts. The tandem won five of the last six games in claiming the 8-4 win. Azusa Pacific won the next match as well when Mikayla Rinker and Courtney Page posted an 8-5 victory. The duo broke serve to take a 7-5 lead then Rinker served the next game out at love for the win at the third position.
Point Loma pulled out the win at the top spot as Carolina Cueva Bucio and Nikki Newell won the final two games in posting an 8-6 triumph.
SINGLES: Azusa Pacific kept momentum in their favor as they won the first three completed matches in straight sets.
Miclat was effective in grabbing a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top position then, just moments later, Jackie Resler notched a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 match. For the second straight match April Wong sealed the team win at the fifth spot. The freshman improved to 4-0 this season, all without dropping a set, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Point Loma's Ellie Gamble put a point in the Sea Lions favor with a 7-5, 7-5 win at the fourth position. Shelby Groevevled was able to grind out a 6-3, 3-6, 13-11 victory at the No. 3 slot for the Sea Lions final team point.
Petra Ivankovic toughed out a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 win at the No. 2 match to secure the Cougars sixth team point and conclude the match.
