AZUSA, Calif. -- Following its historic 2018 campaign which featured its first NCAA playoff victory, Azusa Pacific had three players honored as Division II All-Americans in awards announced by the United Soccer Coaches as well as the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). Freshman midfielder
Gabriel Costa earned All-America first team honors in both programs, while freshman defender
Isaac Bawa earned coaches All-America second team and D2CCA third team honors. Junior forward
Arturo Astorga earned coaches All-America second team recognition.
Costa finished the year with 14 goals and 13 assists, including six game-winning goals. In 14 of the Cougars' 20 matches, Costa registered either a goal or an assist. In the first round of the NCAA playoffs, Costa helped lead the Cougars to a victory over Cal State L.A., as he scored a goal and had an assist in the win.
Bawa anchored an Azusa Pacific defense which posted six shutouts and held opponents to one goal ior less 14 times this season.
Astorga had 11 goals and 10 assists on the season, including two game-winning goals. In late October, Astorga scored a goal in three consecutive PacWest games, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over rival Biola.
Azusa Pacific ended the season with a 17-2-1 overall record, hosting the NCAA West Region championship after defeating Cal State L.A. in the regional tournament second round. The Cougars won the PacWest championship for the first time since finishing first in the conference in back-to-back seasons (2013, 2014).
