PacWest Ascent Continues For Women’s Soccer

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific picked up its first home victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Dominican Thursday night in its first conference home game of the season.

Azusa Pacific took control of its Pacific West Conference home opener early with a seventh-minute goal from Emmy Koflanovich, and Kellie Yoshihara added an insurance goal just 10 minutes into the second half to help lift the Cougars to the victory.

Yoshihara assisted Koflanovich's early score, a shot from the right edge of the box, and Koflanovich returned the favor at the 55-minute mark, centering the ball from the right side to Yoshihara in the middle of the box for a low eight-yard shot that made it 2-0.

Dominican finished with a slight edge in total shots, 11-9, but Azusa Pacific produced the higher quality chances, putting six of its nine shots on goal compared to only one shot on goal for the Penguins, whose four-game win streak was snapped.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tatum French picked up the shutout on behalf of the Cougar defense, which produced its second team shutout of the year.

Azusa Pacific is now 2-1-1 in PacWest play and 2-7-1 overall, while Dominican drops to 3-2 in the PacWest and 6-5-1 overall. The Cougars host Holy Names on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 12:00 p.m. to continue a four-game PacWest homestand over the next two weeks.
