Cougars Convert From Corner

AZUSA, Calif. -- With an attack which produced a season-high 34 shots on a wide variety of scoring opportunities, Azusa Pacific put a pair of second-half corner kicks into the back of the net in a 2-0 victory over Holy Names Saturday afternoon.

It was the first time the Cougars generated over 30 shots in a game since 2015, and it was the second straight shutout for Azusa Pacific, which moved into a tie for third place in the Pacific West Conference standings with a 3-1-1 conference record (3-7-1 overall). After recording an 11-1 edge in shots in the first half, the Cougars' relentless attack produced a 23-1 margin in the second half.

Ella Romero and Brianna Haskins scored the game's only two goals, as the Azusa Pacific attack produced 16 shots on goal while 14 different players recorded a shot attempt. However, the game was scoreless until midway through the second half. At that time, Azusa Pacific had produced a 24-2 edge in shots until Romero scored on the Cougars' 25th shot of the game.

Romero broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute, finishing off a frantic scramble in front of the net which started with Kaylee Nicoll playing a short corner kick to Sydney Gilkerson. She eluded the Holy Names defender to the touch line, where she moved the ball to Haley Bostard at the edge of the 6-yard box. Bostard played the ball towards the middle to Emmy Koflanovich, whose touch was deflected to Romero's feet as she lifted a shot from four yards out near the right post over the keeper to the far post for her fourth goal of the season.

Less than 15 minutes later, Haskins scored her first goal of the year to extend the lead to 2-0, again on a play which started with one of the Cougars' eight corner kicks. Nicoll sent the ball in from the left side, where it was initially well defended by Holy Names. Bostard retreated out of the box under pressure from multiple defenders and found Haskins with space moving towards the box. Haskins took one touch into the space before placing a shot from 25 yards out just over the keeper inside the left post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tatum French notched her second consecutive shutout, making one save while facing two shots on the afternoon. Holy Names starting goalkeeper Nyah Summers made five saves in a scoreless first half. She was replaced at halftime by Alyssa Lopez, who recorded nine saves. The Hawks are now 2-9 overall and 0-5 in the PacWest.

Azusa Pacific remains home for two more PacWest matchups next week, hosting Fresno Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 18 and Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 20.
