Cougars Draw with Swords

AZUSA, Calif. – In their PacWest home opener the Azusa Pacific men's soccer came away with a 1-1 tie against Chaminade on Saturday evening.

It is the second straight season these two squads played to a 1-1 draw.

GOAL BY GOAL – In the 16th minute Tyler Braunthal hit a blistering shot from 30 yards out from the left side. The screamer went into the upper-ninety on the far post.

Early in the second half the Cougars knotted the score. Rene Santos drew the foul in the box in the 54th minute to earn a penalty kick for the home team. Kaleb Armbrust calmly stepped up to the spot and drilled a right foot shot just inside the left post.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Azusa Pacific was wislted for a season high nine offside infractions
- Chaminade held a 11-8 edge in total shots with the Cougars earning the corner kick advantage (8-7)
- Alexsandar Pumpalovic had a team best two shots

QUOTEABLE – "They were playing a high line defensively and depending on the other teams tactics you have to be able to adjust and as much as we are a possession style team, we want variety in how we attack teams," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "Once we recognized their style of play we tried to play the ball in behind their defense. We were successful in our passes but just not getting goals out of those passes."

UP NEXT: The Cougars have little down time as they host Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
