SAN DIEGO – Point Loma used a late goal in the first half to post a 1-0 win against Azusa Pacific on Saturday evening.
In the PacWest opener for both teams, Point Loma moves to 4-2 overall while the Cougars fall to 0-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Point Loma put pressure on the Cougars back lines during the final minutes of the first half. After nearly scoring on Mitch Wheelon shot that was cleared away before crossing the goal line by a sprinting Lloyd Alexander in the 40th minute, Point Loma broke through. Eduardo Gallardo headed a Jacob Moreno cross into the back of the cage in the 41st minute.
Azusa Pacific put their four second half shots on goal from in close but each time Sea Lion goalkeeper Wiktor Lasota made the save.

"I thought this game had a lot of ebbs and flows," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "I thought there were spells we were the better team and spells that they were better."
"Tonight was the most complete game we've had of our five game. The pieces are coming together. For a team that has been struggling to get results we have been training well and we just have to find the break through."

RIVALRY HISTORY – After the Cougars won eight straight against their foes from San Diego, Point Loma has won three straight in the series that began in 1976. Azusa Pacific still holds a 35-9-6 edge in the all-time match-up.
