POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona used four second half goals to pull away from Azusa Pacific for a 5-1 victory in the season opener for both squads.
The 15th ranked Broncos held a 12-3 edge on shot on frame. They also took three of the game's four corner kicks.
The Broncos has won four straight in the series since the Cougars moved to NCAA Division II play.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHT
The only tally in the opening frame came off the boot of Jimmie Villalobos when he scored in the 17th minute. He found the back of the cage off a Jordan Jackmon cross from the right side.Â
A HOPKINS FIRST
In the 62nd minute Ethan Hopkins scored his first collegiate goal. The sophomore tied the score on a header from in-close after the original ball into the box couldn't be cleared by the defense.
PENALTY KICK WINNER & INSURANCE
With just under 20 minutes left, the Broncos drew a foul in box which eventually led to Sergio Monso booting the game winner. In the 80th minute Matthew Perez scored on a penalty kick after the Cougars were whistled for a hand ball in the box on a cross from the right side.
The fourth goal for the Broncos came from a blast off of Kevin Martinez boot into the upper-90 from about 20 yards out. Monso rounded out the scoring with a goal late in the contest.
