Cougars Fall in Series Opener

AZUSA, Calif.  – The Azusa Pacific bats were kept silent on Thursday.

California Baptist snapped the Cougars five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory in the first game of a PacWest four game series.

Garett King was the story of the game. The starting pitcher for the Lancers threw a season high 141 pitches as he held the Cougars to six hits. He struck out eight while the only run he allowed was unearned. It was the righthander's second complete game of the season.

California Baptist got the lead from the get-go as John Glenn looped a two-run, two-out single into left field in the first inning. In the third frame Bryce Macy led off the inning with a solo shot over the rightfield wall to give the visitors a three-run cushion. In bottom half of the stanza, Cam Bennett gave the Cougars (30-5, 17-4 PacWest) their first run with an RBI groundout which allowed Quincy Quintero to touch home plate.

The Lancers made the score 5-1 in the sixth inning when Luke Naviagto had a two-out, two-run base knock. California Baptist (25-14, 16-9) scored the final run of the game with a bases loaded walk in the ninth stanza.

With 16 base hits, California Baptist set their season for most base knocks in a game. Glenn had a team high four hits.

No hitter in the Azusa Pacific was able to piece together more than one hit.

Tomorrow the rivals are back it for another single game. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
